Certainty is dull

If you’ve been around here for a while, you probably know that I like to remind you of your ancestry.

Every human being on the planet has a preference for safety.

If your ancestors didn’t prioritize safety, which usually meant conforming to the tribe, they didn’t live to pass on their genes.

This is why you feel like you’re going to die if you speak in front of a group, voice a contrary point of view, or ask for what you want.

What that translates into in the modern era is a desire for predictability and an urge to minimize uncertainty.

But just because our brains are wired to identify patterns and make predictions, I put it to you that life would be pretty dull if there were no uncertainty.

Why?

Because there’s no thrill in certainty.

And another part of human nature is the desire to explore.

When you face uncertainty, you’re really embarking on adventure.

You’re taking a gamble.

You’re forming a hypothesis and testing it out.

You’re taking a leap of faith.

It should feel thrilling, exhilarating, and fun.

And, if you don’t relate to that last sentence, check in with yourself.

Why is that? Are you stuck in survival mode?

How strong is your sense of adventure?

If it has faded, why is that?

And is it worth rekindling it?

What possibilities are you missing because you’re closed off to adventure?

Think of the last time you experienced adventure in your life.

What made it so thrilling?

How can you bring more of that back into your life?
